April Member Spotlight – ConsignMom

1. Tell us about your business and the service that you provide:

ConsignMom.com was created in the hopes of developing a safe online community for parents to buy and sell their new and gently used children’s strollers, car seats, clothes, toys, furniture and more.

2. How did you decide to get started?

I have used our local consignment store, but was looking for another means of trying to sell our unused son’s things (car seat, clothes, etc).  I have used sites like Craigslist and Backpage, but don’t feel 100% comfortable with the people and other listings on those sites.  That’s when I started to do some research and created ConsignMom.com.

3. What kind of background of expertise do you have in your field?

I love to shop online and read reviews for the various products that I buy, and have become the “go-to” person in my group of friends who look for certain baby and kids products.  In addition, I have bought and sold many things through consignment stores and sales.

4. What trends do you see in your current industry?

More and more people are becoming comfortable buying and selling things online, and this trend of online shopping (for both new and gently used merchandise) will continue to grow in the coming years.

5. What things do you find to be most demanding about your job?

Definitely just trying to get the word out at this point!  Since we just started up in May of this year, my focus has been around increasing user registrations and letting people know what we are all about.  The response so far has been great and people seem to think it is a great idea – I just need all of those people to tell ten of their friends J

6. What do you find to be the most rewarding about your job and your day to day routine?

I love the fact that our Web site allows parents to reuse perfectly good strollers and toys instead of throwing them out.

7. What advice would you give to someone else who is interested in starting a business like yours?

My advice for people interested in starting a business is simple – go for it and make sure you network!

If there are people really interested in starting up an online consignment store (similar to consignmom.com), we are actually interested in franchising out different cities.  With my home being Phoenix, that is the only market unavailable.  Feel free to contact me (kate@consignmom.com) for details on franchising if you are interested.

8. What are you most proud of as a parent-preneur?

I am most proud of being able to start something on my own (with the technical help of my husband) – but the idea and business model was really my own and that is what I am most proud of.

9. How have you been able to manage your time between work and your family?

Obviously raising our two-year old son is my first priority, and the amount of work related to the site hasn’t been too demanding since we launched.

10. What has been the most effective way for you to promote yourself?

Social networking has helped especially since it is an online business.  I am always on the lookout for other ways to promote the business locally through events, groups and other activities.

Finally: What does your “Milk Money” provide for you and your family?

Our “Milk Money” provides our family the support to raise our son and his soon-to-be baby sister (due December 3rd)!
